He carries our sorrows…
This piece is a study, a tribute to the New Zealand Catholic artist, the late Colin McCahon. He often used this iconic form of the cross (the tau – from the Greek letter ‘T’) in his work and had the habit of using words in his pictures. I was struck by the way McCahon referred to the cross as a ‘load-bearing structure’. In brutal, construction terms, that is what a cross was built to be. Metaphorically, it does that too. As Isaiah foreshadows in the passage quoted here, Jesus’ death is a demonstration of God’s desire to bear our sufferings – our crosses – with us.
