Poem
by Dan Jakob
I cannot walk away from me
I'm terrified you can
Will you be ever there for me?
Is my name in your plan?
O flame that lights this lamp for me
Burn off what doubt you can
Though only you can constant be
And I am just a man
Vulnerability
by Margaret Jellis
I don’t like being vulnerable, Lord,
Acknowledging that I’m not in charge, not writing the script.
Then, Lord, I see you in Gethsemane
Praying alone, agonising, waiting,
Choosing not to evade your enemies,
Handing yourself over, “no matter what”.
They arrive with their noise and clumsy violence.
In the hours that follow the paradox is this…
In your agony we see your glory;
In your final cry we know “It is finished”.
All because you chose not to evade your enemies,
Handing yourself over, “no matter what”.
Poem for Good Friday 2007
By Dan Jakob
You have limits, feel the strain
You are carrying too much pain
Human Jesus suffered too
He fell, he couldn’t make it through
His heavy weight, a timber cross
Innocence, a cause that’s lost
Abuse, his friends deserting
He was really, really hurting
But someone helped the man divine
And could do ‘til the end of time
Since his journey never ends
If when one falls, another tends
Fishing
by Dan Jakob
We’re swimming in a fishing net
Our ancestors have thrown
We cannot move beyond it
Though we would tear it to pieces
Or move to where it’s weakest
And join others who struggle
Knowing our destiny is shared
In the breaking of the net
Or in glorious defeat
We walk above a safety net
We fell and found it there
Hope it will catch us again
Though we would walk away from it
As it frees us to journey
Or remain and see its need
Knowing our destiny is shared
In the tending of this net
Or in a mighty fall
We stop and look beyond the net
At the wild sea and air
And dream another world there
Where the battle and hurt is done
And there is no more falling
No need for might or glory
Knowing our destiny is shared
Where struggles and journeys end
Or all is one. Amen
