About Us

At St G’s we like to think of  ourselves as an open and friendly church which is firmly rooted in our community here in Tufnell Park.

We don’t like to label ourselves because we want everyone to feel that they have something to find here and explore with us. Our worship tries to reflect the kind of folk we are … searching, compassionate, open to God’s new plans, but firmly rooted in all the gifts that our Christian history has passed on to us.

The Sunday Experience

St George's tries to be a living experience of God’s freedom, hope and power. Like any community, we have our struggles, but we try to promote mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
We welcome people of any faith and none, and look forward to sharing the journey with you.

We share our building with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, who hold their Sunday service between 7am

and 10am each week. We have established a close

relationship with them and enjoy the richness that

their religious culture brings.

Our service on Sunday begins at 11.00am, with music and prayer forming an integral part

of our services. We like to experiment with our liturgy at times, with contributions from members of our church community.

Children are very welcome and have their own Sunday Group activities too, which often contribute to the main worship.  We like to be both reverentially noisy and prayerfully silent at different times and always seek to listen to what God is saying to us and doing with us.

Our Buildings

St George's church is a modern, airy, spacious building,  with a large central worshipping space, with chairs arranged in a circle to signify our worship as a community coming together. We also have a creche, upper gallery, kitchen and meeting rooms, small car park, and a church hall across the road, which has its own enclosed garden. The ground floor of the church has easy disabled access.

Many groups use our buildings throughout the week. More details of community activities can be found on the Groups buttons on the menu on the left. Rooms can be hired, subject to availability.

Our Parish

The parish is shown within a red diamond shape on this map. The boundaries are the railway and Holloway Road to the North, and  Brecknock Road and Camden

Road to the south.

The parish now includes both the parish of St George's and the former parish of All Saints, Tytherton Road, which has been converted into dwellings.

The history of St George's church

The design of the former Victorian building in Tufnell Park Road is based on a medieval church in Salonica.

St George's parish was combined with All Saints, Tytherton Road when that church was converted into

flats in the 1990s.

The World War memorial plaques and the Tufnell family plaque were brought from All Saints and installed in St George's.

In 1995, the PCC and vicar then, Rev Simon Parke, commissioned local architect David Gibson to remodel St George's interior to include a Prayer Chapel, a meeting room, a counselling room, kitchen, creche and upper gallery. This enabled St George's to offer a much wider range of facilities and services to the local community.

The Church of England has been serving this area since 1861, when the larger parish of St Mary's Islington was split up into smaller units.

At the time, this part of North London  was growing rapidly due to the coming of the railways to King’s Cross and so a church building was erected and St George was made the patron saint.

Later on in the 1970’s the Victorian building (photograph on the left) was sold and a new church by Clive Alexander was built in 1974, almost opposite the old Victorian church.

The old building became an amazing space for a dedicated Shakespearean Theatre, which closed some 25 years later and has now been bought and is in the process of being completely renovated by a Nigerian based church called The Rock Tower.

We at St George’sare very pleased to be able to welcome them to our community and look forward to working together to build a more tolerant, caring, respectful and integrated locality.

It is today a community which is still growing and we now welcome people from all parts of the globe, who bring with them so much that is new and we at St George’s not only welcome that but want to share it with them.
